General Anesthesia

What is General Anesthesia

Just like humans there are some procedures that must be performed under general anesthesia which means they are fully unconscious.  General anesthesia is a combination of medications that put your pet in a Sleep Like State, this way your pet will not feel any pain during the procedure.  We use a combination of intravenous drugs and inhaled gases.

How we keep your pet safe

We can assure you that modern day anesthesia is very safe, our Veterinarians and Technicians are qualified to deliver general anesthesia.  To further lower any risks of general anesthesia the vet will perform a physical exam and do pre anesthetic blood work, to catch any underlying health issues.  In addition we have specific anesthesia protocols in place, we monitor your pet though out and after the procedure.  We use high tech monitoring equipment to keep track of heartrate, blood pressure, respiration and temperature to ensure our patients safety.

What to Expect

After the vets performs physical exam and reviews bloodwork.  They feel it is safe to proceed with the anesthesia, we will than Premed your pet.  Premed is a combination of medication that will help you pet relax, decrease any anxiety and pain.  Once your pet is comfortable we will place an IV catheter and fluids. It's important to have IV access and fluids in case of emergency situation under anesthesia.  We than use an injectable anesthesia which will make your pet go into a sleep like state.  We insert an intubation tube into their trachea so we can administer gas to keep them in that sleep like state though the procedure.  The gas and oxygen is delivered through the intubation tube by an anesthetic machine, similar to humans.  Once we know your pet is fully asleep we will prep for the procedure.

Recovery

Once the procedure is complete we than remove your pet from
the gas/anesthetic machine and set them up in a nice comfortable warm bed to recover in. Our technicians either snuggle or get in the bed with your pet to monitor and help them recover peacefully. We even have a baby sling so we can keep your pet close and give them lots of  love during recovery.    We often send pictures to our clients of your pet recovering to give you peace of mind that everything was successful and your pet is comfortable.
Pain management is very important to us, we will monitor for pain
throughout the day to make sure they are pain free.

At the end of the day when you pick up your pet we will give you at
home instructions and additional pain meds.

If you have any questions or concerns we are always her to help, call us or email us and we can discuss anesthesia and your pet in more detail.
Don't forget to give us your mobile number when you drop off your pet so we can send you updates and pictures throughout the day.
