 Patient Monitoring

We take anesthesia and monitoring of our patients very seriously.  Every procedure involving an anesthetic has a Veterinarian and a Veterinarian Technician with the patient from pre anesthetic medication right through to recovery.  The safety of your pet is very important to us.  Each patient undergoing anesthesia will have a specific drug protocol based  on species, age, breed, pre anesthetic blood results and the procedure they are having.

Vitals Monitored

Picture
All of these vitals are monitored constantly while under anesthesia
Blood Pressure
This gives us quantitative information about our Heart Rate, this tells us that the heart is pumping enough volume through the heart to supply oxygen to organs and tissues in the body.  Low blood pressure means decreased oxygen to vital organs like the brain and kidneys.  Low blood pressure can be a common side effect of anesthesia drugs and is crucial for patient monitoring.  We have a state-of-the-art blood pressure monitor that is hooked up to your pet at all times.  Our Veterinary Technician will also have hands on the pulse which is also a good indicator.  This is also the importance of IV catheter and Fluids for all our patients, if we encounter decrease in blood pressure, we can quickly correct it with fluids.
CO2 Monitoring
Carbon Dioxide monitoring is extremely important this is the best tool we have to evaluate the respiratory system. This allows us to know our patient is breathing adequately and lots of oxygen is circulating around the body.  Increase in CO2 can lead to heart arrythmias and decreased blood flow to brain.
ECG/EKG Electrocardiogram
We can constantly see your pets ECG on the monitor, this will alert us to any changes in their heart rhythm from the anesthesia or potential heart disease issues.
Temperature
Anesthesia always causes a decrease in temperature.  Decreased temperature can lead to longer recovery and possible post surgical infections. We use an esophageal thermometer which measures core body temperature and a Bair Hugger that maintains our patients body temperature.
SPO2 Saturation
This measures the amount of oxygen in the blood stream and carried by red blood cells to the body. This ensures the patient is getting enough oxygen through the anesthetic machine.  Inadequate breathing and excessive bleeding can contribute to decreased O2.
Heart and Respiratory Rate
These values are important to ensure that the patient is breathing adequately, getting enough oxygen and the heart is able to pump blood through out the body delivering oxygen to vital organs.
Technician Human Touch
This is the most valuable tool we have a technician dedicated to your patient.   Hands on your pet at all times and can alert the vet of any changes, so immediate measure can be taken to keep your pet safe.

If you have any concerns or questions please always feel free to call us or email us, we are here to help and give you peace of mind that your pet will be safe and comfortable through any procedure.
