Surgical Pain

Before Surgery

We start pain management before the surgical procedure starts; this is called Preemptive Pain Management.  The Vet will anticipate the level of pain expected and medicate ahead of time to reduce the impact of pain.  This is usually done with an injection which will now travel through your pets body and set the stage in your pets nervous system to protect from the pain of the surgery

During Surgery

There are many different ways we manage pain during surgery from Freezing blocks to Epidurals, depending on the procedure the vet will decide what addition pain management is needed.   Our Veterinary Technicians are always monitoring your pet during the procedure and will alert the vet of any changes.

After Surgery

All of our surgical patients receive an injection of a narcotic pain reliever and a dose of NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) this will keep pain meds on board through the recovery and help decrease any inflammation.
Depending on the procedure we may use Laser therapy.  This will help speed up the healing process by acting fast on inflammation, stimulating blood and lymphatic circulation, and reduce pain.

At Home Pain Management

Our goal is to keep your pet comfortable, at discharge you will be sent home with pain meds generally an NSAID which will help with pain and inflammation.  We will go over when your pet needs meds and how to identify if they are in pain.  We are always here to help after you bring your pet home,  just call us if you have any concerns or questions.
